His Thesis focused on the design, development and modelling of a new technique of generation of polymeric microparticles and polymeric byphasic matrixes to different biomedical applications. During his PhD, he was a visiting scientist in the Chemical Engineering Department of the University of Texas at Austin (USA), participating in a original research on protein imprinting by means of polymer based particles, below the supervision of Prof. Nicholas A. Peppas.

Afterwards he holds several postdoc positions in:

The Principe Felipe Research Center (Valencia), with research on cancer diagnosis, specializing in conjugation processes and polymer therapeutics, below the supervision of Dr. Maria J. Alonso, and

The Institute for Bioscience and Biotechnology Research (University of Maryland, USA), below the supervision of Dr. Silvia Muro, focusing on nano-scale targeting-based platforms for selective delivery of therapeutic products for the treatment of several lysosomal disesases by enzyme replacement therapies and oral delivery of therapeutics by antibody coated nanocarriers loaded in alginate/chitosan microparticles to cross the gastrointestinal epithelium. In this period he participated in the teaching of the course “Modeling Physiological Systems and Lab” at the University of Maryland at College Park.

Also, he was a lecturer at Universidad de Salamanca during 4 years, with teaching in different undergraduate degree programs (Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Environmental Sciences), and teaching in the Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering. As a postdoctoral researcher he had two main interests: thermal insulation by means of encapsulated phase change materials, and the development of new targeted magnetic molecularly imprinted nanomedicines to improve the treatment of Multiple Myeloma. He was awarded with the Special Award New Entrepreneurships of the University-Enterprise Challenge Competition to develop a project on new materials for thermal insulation of buildings.

Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Pharmaceutical Technology (Universidad de La Laguna), with teaching in the Pharmacy Degree. Also, he taught in the Master’s Degree in Biomedicine and the Master’s Degree in Food Safety and Quality and was the Director of Secretariat of Sustainability of Universidad de La Laguna (University Gobernment Team). He has extensive experience in the field of Targeted Drug Delivery Systems in Cancer, Neurodegenerative Diseases and Tissue Engineering. He is co-author in 20 peer reviewed publications (EJPB Most Cited Paper Award 2016) and co-inventor in 1 US Patent (B2).

Prof. Dr. Edgar Pérez-Herrero Associate Professor Head of ENCAPBIO eperezhe@ull.edu.es Dr. Edgar Pérez-Herrero received a B.S.E. degree in Chemical Engineering and a PhD in Chemical Engineering with extraordinary award from Universidad de Salamanca.
