Paleolithic Geoarchaeology

Paleolithic Geoarchaeology

Our main geoarchaeological focus lies within the Paleolithic period, with particular emphasis on the Middle Paleolithic and the study of the last Neanderthal communities in southeastern Iberia. Much of our research has centered on two key archaeological sites: El Salt and Abric del Pastor, both located in Alcoy, Alicante (Spain). These sites have yielded exceptionally well-preserved stratigraphic sequences that are ideal for applying high-resolution geoarchaeological techniques. At both sites, we have developed three main lines of research: the study of human–environment interactions, the deciphering of archaeological palimpsests, and experimental archaeology related to fire use.

Our Partner Sites in Europe

The AMBI Lab collaborates with a network of archaeological and research sites across Europe, working closely with local teams to investigate past human-environment interactions. These partnerships allow us to apply our geoarchaeological methods in diverse contexts—from Paleolithic cave sites to open-air settlements—strengthening our comparative research and fostering international scientific exchange. This map highlights the key sites across Europe where the AMBI Lab is actively involved in archaeological research and collaborative projects.
